Officers had responded to 767 West 2nd Avenue in reference to stabbing and found the victim sitting on the floor while family members applied pressure to wounds on the back of his head and body, the report said.
The victim told police it was a random attack and he didn't know who attacked him, the report said.
He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries and had to undergo surgery for a stab wound to the lower back portion of his head.
Officers at the scene found a trail of blood that led them to a knife blade cover in a front yard and blood in front of an apartment at 128 W. 7th Street as well as blood on the front door handle, the report said.
The officers knocked on the door and Diaz Gonzalez answered. He had blood on his ear and spontaneously said he'd been attacked first, the report said.

Surveillance footage showed Diaz Gonzalez speaking with the victim before he returned to his apartment and exited holding a large kitchen knife in a "ready position" before he ran toward the victim, who tried to flee, the report said.
A knife was later recovered from under a parked vehicle nearby, the report said.
Diaz Gonzalez was arrested and booked into jail. He later appeared before a judge who appointed him a public defender and ordered him held without bond.
